Shimano Nexus and Alfine Sprockets
Our Shimno Nexus Premium Wheel Kit comes with an 18T and a 21T sprocket. The larger the sprocket used, the lower the gearing (better hill climbing) will be. The smaller the sprocket used, the higher the gearing (faster top speed) will be. All of the sprockets will work with a standard 8 or 9-speed chain except for the 16T. The 16T is a wider spocket and needs to be milled down to work with our regular chain.
Share your comments below: Can you point me to any good reference material on how to change the sprockets on the Nexus hub? Is it as simple as removing the cable housing, then popping the "C" clip and pulling off the sprocket? Thanks for any directions you can provide! Posted by TCashion 07/27/2009 06:51:43 AM The operations manual from Shimano is a good place to start. The procedure is as you've described. Would the consumer have to mill them down thereselves or can you do it for an additional cost?(When you get some more in) Posted by ron 07/28/2009 01:30:57 PM We can do it for you. In the meantime we've found some track cogs that can be modified to work on the Alfine. What is the possibility of mounting double sprockets on an internal rear hub? A 22T+16T pairing. I assume at the beginning of a hilly terrain we could manually move the chain to our larger sprocket by adding a few chain links? By default chain could sit over the smaller one? I assume a flip-flop set up would be more difficult to manage? Posted by newGIaddict 06/25/2010 02:53:11 AM Not very likely. There is not a lot of room there.
