Ok, I'm confused. Clipless pedals means that your foot is clipped to the pedal? If that's right, it's a really dumb name. Also, I can't see how your feet clip in.

Yes, the terminology is confusing. Clipless pedals refer to the lack of toe-clips which are the cages that hold your normal shoe.
On the SPD system a clip is attached to the bottom of your shoe and locks into the pedal. SPD-compatible shoes are required.

Actually, isn't it a "cleat" (rather than a "clip") that is attached to the bottom of the shoe? Toe-clip pedals do indeed use a cage (the toe-clip) and have strap(s) that tighten to hold your shoe to the pedal, and those came first. Later, when Shimano introduced SPD, the cleat-engaged pedals, the term "clipless" was used to distinguish the new pedals from the older toe-clip style. Thus there are really no "clips" associated with clipless pedals.
