Catrike Wheel Extension Kit (26-inch/700 conversion)
Download: Installation Manual Many people already have their own wheels and idler parts, so we have seperated the parts out that you will need in the above drop-down selection. Most people will need the Basic Extension Kit, a Chain Rerouting Kit, a Wheel, and Tire. Kits are described below. Tires and tubes are available seperately from our Catalog. Basic Extension Kit - $174.95 Includes the following: Extension Pair Mounting hardware Chain Extension with Master Link Chain Rerouting Kit #1a: Rear fixed mounting clamp TerraCycle Sport Power Idler Mounting Hardware Chain Rerouting Kit #1b: Rear fixed mounting clamp TerraCycle Elite Power Idler (Titanium w/Ceramic Bearings) Mounting Hardware Chain Rerouting Kit #2a: Rear adjustable mounting clamp TerraCycle Sport Power Idler Mounting Hardware Chain Rerouting Kit #2b: Rear adjustable mounting clamp TerraCycle Elite Power Idler (Titanium w/Ceramic Bearings) Mounting Hardware Our extension kit was designed to use the more popular 26-inch rear wheels, but we have tested it to work with 700c wheels on all the 20-inch Catrike models. We have added two wheel options to the dropdown above including the Catrike OEM 26-inch wheel found on the Expedition (for those of you that want matching rims). We have also included our own handbuilt wheel featuring a Deore disc brake hub and Velocity AeroHeat rim. We build our own wheels inhouse, so contact us for special needs. (Tires and tubes are available from our Catalog pages) One of the cool things about our extension kit is that it allows you to add a rear disc brake that can function as a parking brake. If you would like a premade kit with a parking brake lever you can choose that option above. We have tested the following trike configurations: Catrike Villager: - Compatible with all rerouting kits - 26x1.5 - Fender Compatible - 26x1.75 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.0 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.35 - Fender Compatible - 700c - Fender Compatible Catrike Trail: - Compatible with all rerouting kits - 26x1.5 - Fender Compatible - 26x1.75 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.0 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.35 - Not Fender Compatible - 700c - Not Fender Compatible Catrike Pocket: - Compatible with #2 rerouting kits - 26x1.5 - Fender Compatible - 26x1.75 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.0 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.35 - Not Fender Compatible - 700c - Not Fender Compatible Catrike Road: - Compatible with all rerouting kits - 26x1.5 - Fender Compatible - 26x1.75 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.0 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.35 - Not Fender Compatible - 700c - Not Fender Compatible Catrike Speed: - Most gear setups do not require a rerouting kit - Compatible with #2 rerouting kits - 26x1.5 - Fender Compatible - 26x1.75 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.0 - Fender Compatible - 26x2.35 - Not Fender Compatible - 700c - Not Fender Compatible Catrike Expedition: - No rerouting kit needed - 29er 2.35 - Not Fender Compatible - 29er < 2.0 - Fender Compatible - 700 <2.0 - Fender Compatible About the Kit: Catrike owners have been asking us for these for a couple of years and after nearly 6 months of design and prototyping we have finally finished this project. The results are fantastic. We have created a very nice extension kit that will allow you to put a 26 inch or 700c wheel on your 20-inch Cat. So, what am I talking about? Well, let’s suppose that you bought a Catrike Road and then the Expedition came out. Well, you really like the Expedition with its longer wheelbase and larger rear tire, but you have a lot invested in your trike. Up until now your only choice has been to sell the road (or give it to your significant other) and then buy an Expedition for yourself. While there is nothing wrong with that (after all, we are more than happy to sell you an Expedition) it may not be in your budget. The basic kit includes the machined extensions and bolt hardware. The kit is designed to work with a standard 26-inch wheel with the appropriate chain rerouting kit. Our extension kit is setup with the OEM mounting for a Rohloff hub. The extension kit does not change the width of the dropouts, so it remains at 135mm which will work well with most 26-700 wheels. NOTE: In mid/late 2004 Catrike started using the newer dropouts found on current models. These extensions will only work with these current/newer style dropouts. IT HAS COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT SOME OF THE DROPOUTS USED ON PRE-MARCH-2008 MODELS HAVE 3MM DIFFERENCE ON THE TOP CIRCULAR PIECE. THE REST OF THE DROPOUT IS THE SAME. IN ORDER TO FIT THE EXTENSIONS ON IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO MAKE A SMALL CUT IN THE EXTENSIONS TO GO AROUND THIS PART. A DREMEL TOOL, DRILL BIT, OR FILE WILL WORK. IF YOU KNOW YOUR TRIKE QUALIFIES FOR THIS TIMEFRAME WE CAN MAKE THIS SMALL NOTCH FOR YOU PRIOR TO SHIPPING.
Share your comments below: This is absolutely incredible!!! I have been wanting something like this for some time and the pictures above show obvious professional craftsmanship. I can't wait to get these on my trike! Posted by Todd Peterson 12/08/2009 09:26:02 AM Depending on price, I will be very interested. Looks like a good deal of engineering went into the development of the extensions. Nice work! Posted by Russ 12/09/2009 07:50:42 AM This is pretty cool. I have a Speed that has never had a high enough gear for me, even with a 56 up front. It would be great to be able to drop a 559 or 650 on it. Will you be able to machine these in a way that will allow the the seat angle to be lowered as well? Posted by Goodgulf 12/09/2009 11:54:43 AM Our design maintains the ride height of the trike so as not to change the steering geometry. The angle (rake) can be adjusted somewhat by your choice of tires. If you have a special setup (specific wheel, etc) that you need we can produce a one-off in those cases. EXCELLENT! Bring it on. Been watching your site, waiting for pricing. Bought our Road and Trail from you folks about a year ago. ...another Road waiting for speed...! Posted by Michael 12/11/2009 03:45:32 AM I want one as soon as possible. I have a catrike villager. Thank you for making my dream come true. Posted by jahnke2 12/11/2009 06:36:22 AM I want this so bad. This will make my Trail the trike I always knew it could be. Posted by Jack 12/11/2009 06:40:47 AM Fantastic product. Will these work on an '04 Road? The rear geometry and the chain line are a bit different than current Catrikes. Posted by Geoff 12/11/2009 06:57:06 AM In mid/late 2004 the new dropouts came out. These will only only work with the existing/newer style dropouts. Count me in. I have that muscle edition Road that I bought from you beginning of the year. Will you have different wheels available? I'd like a 26 wheel with a brake rotor. Posted by Chris in VA 12/11/2009 08:57:42 AM It looks very nice. It would be tempting for an upgrade to a 559 wheel for my Speed. Is the 2nd chain pulley always necessary and will that be part of the kit? Posted by PaulM 12/11/2009 05:45:08 PM We will be offering the extension by themselves as well as in part of a kit with any idler assemblies that might be needed. Can these be painted? I think if it was painted it will look like this is part of the trike and not an add on. It still looks sexy though. Posted by Patrick 12/12/2009 03:21:40 AM The actual shipping versions will be anodized black. They look very sexy and do not have the "unfinished" look of the bare aluminum. I think you will be very happy with the unique look. If someone wanted them to match their trikes color they could be powdercoated to match, but I think the black looks more sporty. How will this affect the rigitity of the trike? Won't extending the rear wheel out cause it to add more tortional force to the rear? I realize the trikes are pretty stiff, but won't it feel sloppier? Posted by Matthew in GA 12/12/2009 09:08:39 AM In our simulations and field testing we found that any difference of rigidity at the wheel mounting point of the extension was not measurable. Any lateral flex is consistent with the use of a large wheel used on similar trike. In our road testing the Road equipped with the extensions felt nearly identical to the Expedition in the corners. If you would produce these for pre-2005 Catrikes with the older dropouts (I have a 2004 Pocket), I would definitely want a set, assuming reasonable pricing. Posted by Steve in NY 12/12/2009 11:38:50 PM Depending on the amount of interest we may consider it. If you used these extensions, but retained the 406 wheel, you would get a more laid back seat angle, a higher bb, and a longer wheelbase. For many riders..... the more aero position could be faster. Just a thought. Posted by Geoff 12/13/2009 06:09:44 AM Changing the rake/angle of the trike will affect the steering geometry. I would not recommend a 20-inch wheel with these extensions, but a 24-inch wheel would be a good compromise if you really wanted to change the angle. I just got the prototype on. Fits like a glove. Using a 24" sun rhyno lite 18 spoke rim with schwalbe marathon plus tire. Hub is a shimano alfine 8 speed internal. Fender is a modified 26" planet bike fender. Front is a schlumpf hsd. Major part from Utah trikes. I also got jtek shifter from Ashley too. I can tell that a lot of thought and craftmanship went into this product. Thank you Utah Trikes! Posted by Todd Peterson 12/14/2009 09:10:32 AM This will save me from essentially giving my Speed away to get the 700 I've been craving. Any idea of the price? Now I'll have to see if my Catrike dealer is willing to install and sell me a 700 cc wheel and tire! Posted by Grayghost 12/16/2009 09:29:52 AM Pricing to come soon. We will have complete kits with rear wheels. Can mudguards be attached to the extensions? In the photo, the tyre clearance is very tight. Is that with a 700 or 26" wheel? I would like to fit a 26" wheel to my Speed with a rear mudguard. Posted by PaulM 12/20/2009 06:01:49 PM Yes, a rear fender can be attached. We have allowed enough clearance to fit a 26-inch big apple and still fit a fender. I have a 2005 Catrike Speed and I'm very interested in setting it up with a 700 wheel. I think you have a winner and I really like the idea of buying a whole kit including the 700 wheel. I had thought about buying a Catrike 700 but prefer the seat angle on the Speed - this is going to be a perfect match. Posted by Cary Strickland 12/21/2009 08:48:05 PM Very inovative I cant wait! Can racks and flags, bobs still be used? Posted by duffmetal 12/22/2009 05:01:18 AM Racks, Flags and trailers will continue to work with the extensions. Love it, my '06 Speed is just screaming for a 26" wheel so it can play with my '08 Expedition. Great work guys! Posted by helomike7000 12/29/2009 03:09:34 PM I have a 2007 Catrike Trail, am I in? I'll buy the kit, wheel and fender from youse guys IMMEDIATELY if it will work for me! I feel the need for speed! Any price yet for the kit, or release date? Posted by Timh 12/29/2009 09:17:03 PM This may sound crazy, but will this work on a Villager? Posted by Walks Slow Man 01/13/2010 10:06:03 PM Not crazy at all! The villager with a 26 is a truly awesome trike. So, for a Catrike Speed, do I need the Basic Extension Kit and the Chain Re-routing Kit? Posted by Grayghost 01/25/2010 08:41:57 AM Yes, you need the Basic Extension Kit and a #2 rerouting kit. I currently have an 09' pocket that I'm looking to extend to a 26" rear. Saw this while I was deployed in Iraq last year. Do you have a full kit for it? To incliude the rear 26"? Posted by Rich 02/05/2010 02:48:53 AM All of the parts are above using the dropdown selection. Hey Ashley-The kit came yesterday-It is Bad*ss-Fit was perfect. I set everything up per instructions-ready to ride-only downside is 18-20mph wind and snow blowing-Thanks again Posted by Paul 02/25/2010 09:10:19 PM does this extension kit void the frame warranty , do to more leverage on the dropouts. Posted by Anonymous 02/26/2010 08:23:45 AM The current word from Catrike is that the Extensions do not void the warranty.
