Our Carbon Footprint - Ashley's Modified Edge

Click here to read more articles

Several months ago, I started a project to turn the TerraTrike Edge into a true race machine. You can see the results of those efforts here. After one lucky triker took that trike home I decided to build another one. Here she is:

We started with the Carbon Fiber Edge which lends itself to the "all black" stealth motif. A custom composite seat, tinted fairing, and matching carbon fiber wheel discs complete the ensemble.

I went completely bald with the rear tire using the Schwalbe Kojak 20x1.35 racing tire. You can also catch a glimps of this trike's 14-seed internal transmission, the Rohloff SpeedHub. In order to get the seat as low as possible for stable fast turning I chopped about four inches off the seat stays. The seat rests about 1/8-inch abouve the wheel. The rear wheel is handmade using the Velocity Aeroheat rim and covered by custom carbon fiber wheel discs.

The Rohloff Speedhub keeps things simple and elegant with just one sprocket. I'm running the power side of the chain through the frame tubing and using a custom-mounted TerraCycle Titanium Power Idler to route power to the sprocket. To keep the chain tensioned and flowing under the frame for it's return route to the cranks up front the Rohloff tensioner works perfectly.

Schlumpf High Speed Drive
This trike has overdrive! Equipped with a 56T chainring on the Schlumpf HSD and a Rohloff in the rear, there's no reason to shift into overdrive until you are doing 25MPH. Once in overdrive the Schlumpf HSD gives us a virtual 140T chainring. Combined with the Rohloff we get the following gearing: 56T/18-96 Gear Inches and 140T/45-240 Gear Inches. At 90rpm cadence that gives me 25MPH in direct drive and a whopping 64MPH in overdrive.

14-speeds with one hand
The Rohloff Speedhub has 14 gears and they are all accessed by just twisting the shifter.

The shifting all happens in the hub, so gear shifting is always smooth.

Carbon Wheel Covers
On a carbon trike you need carbon wheel covers. These custom covers were made for us by Garrie Hill. Each wheel has a cover for each side. In all, the six covers weigh exactly one pound. Not too bad!

Each wheel has one side with a cutout for accessing the valve stem.

High Performance Idler Mods
We've radically altered the chainline to get peak performance. And, of course, we are using TerraCycle Idlers.

Hydraulics
This trike is equipped with Avid Juicy 7 Hydraulic brakes. Always perfectly adjusted and ready to stop on a dime.

I'm running Schwalbe Stelvios in the front. These 20x1-1/8 folding tires are light and fast. At 120psi they are as hard as a rock.

The Mueller Windwrap XT fairing looks cool and cuts through the air.

Ashley, you are "The Man". I love seeing and reading about your custom jobs, and this one is the best yet, by far. Keep up the great work.

How fast do these things generally go on, say, a flat road? What about hills?

I can estimate that this trike is at least $10,000, right? I wouldn't be surprised if it were a LOT more. It really is a beautiful machine. Take it to Battle Mountain and set a record!

can you post a video with it going 65mph?
Posted by chim chim

Sorry, the trike was sold a couple months ago, so you'll have to wait for the speed videos. The fastest I ever got it to go on level ground was 43MPH, but it was nice to know I had more gears if I could use them.

Ashley have you considered using your quad's transmition on another "high speed" mod. 14 gears plus the trans gears should put you near 50 MPH. Think you could hold it stable at that speed?

Combining the Rohloff with the Schlumpf HSD already gives us gearing in the 70MPH range. Another mid-drive would give us a lot more gear choices, but most would be overlapping.

What the price?

Most custom Edges that we've built to this extent cost between $6000-7500 depending on the options.

What does it weigh?
Posted by Nicky
07/19/2009 05:26:57 AM

with the fairing and wheel disk covers it came in at about 32lbs.

Please, please, offer kits with these kinds of components and the carbon fiber frame. Ever thought of using a Nuvinci Continuously Variable Planetary transmission instead of the Rohloff?
Are the frame tube joiners machined aluminum?
Engineering art! Well done!

07/30/2009 11:31:09 AM

We don't have any kits, but we can build you what you want. We have built two almost exactly like this with the Nuvinci.

will a CATRIKE 700 do the same speeds as this custom trike with the same mods or gear system?
Posted by Randy
08/09/2009 01:19:15 AM

The 700 is an extremely fast trike. With the higher gearing it will be able to get into the 40mph range.
Posted by Ashley

ahhh....for the active guy with a Ferrari and a Lear Jet comes....this piece of excellence. My Catrike Expy is already worth more than my 92 Corolla that I carry it on (so is the Thule roof rack for that matter) so all I can do is read and weep. Thanks for showing us what can be done with more money than spare time. Truly magnificent !!!!

Out of this world. A piece of art. Why not put both chains inside the tube - and the gear cable in the other tube?
Posted by Dan
10/07/2009 04:39:44 AM

Because then you have to run the chain through a bunch of tubing and add drag.

Are those wheel covers available separately or do we have to wait for someone else to sell them?
Posted by Bruno
05/10/2010 03:45:20 PM

The wheel disc covers are made specifically for a particular rim. We are working with a new supplier and will eventually be offering them.

Great looking trike. I totally want one. So we know it is super fast, can it climb? If so I want the next build!!! Can it fold up or can it be made to fold or is it one sold frame?
Posted by GMC Michelson
07/11/2010 04:05:46 PM

It is not foldable. As of today we only have parts to make 2 more of these.

Wow!! :-)

Are the Carbon fiber wheel covers available yet? They look grat on this trike. What is the cost of these if theyare available?
Posted by SnapKrPop

That project was abandoned. As of now we do not have a source for carbon wheel discs.
