I use dot size bright green latex paint on the outside edge of my tire. This way, I just look for the green and that side goes OUT.
One other thing I do is inflate to about 30 Psi and then deflate. This will allow any wrinkles in the tube to come out, should there be any. Then, I inflate to 5-10% over the max inflation. I do this because you lose about that much when you take the pump off. Lastly, invest in tire liners. They are light and provide extra protection.
