Overview
It Folds
The ICE Compact Flat Twist (C.F.T) fold is standard on all ICE trikes. The folding is based around a lightweight heat treated aluminium hinge on the main frame. This allows the rear of the trike to pivot so that the rear wheel fits snugly between the front wheels. To fold, you simply release the seat by unscrewing the retention knobs and a quick release lever, once this has been done the handlebars are folded by loosening a quick release lever, from here it's just a quick release on the main frame and you're ready to go. Folding the trike is normally completed in well under 30 seconds. The fold has been designed to work with ICE accessories such as our racks and our Performance Tailbox.
Whether it's putting the trike in the back of the car to visit a local trail or loading it onto a small airplane for the tour of your life, the ICE C.F.T fold provides the convenience and portability you need.
Front & Rear Suspension
Base model has 20" Rigid rear wheel. Suspension is optional.
Front Suspension
The ICE front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) is the result of over three years of continued development. The system has been specifically engineered to answer the suspension requirements of trikes and delivers 40mm (1.57") of smooth controlled travel . As well as using our in house expertise, we've worked with outside experts to ensure the delivered product meets our exacting standards. Made from heat treated 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminium the unit delivers strength and stiffness combined with light weight to ensure you don't notice the suspension working, you just notice the smooth ride and controlled handling.
Rear Suspension
The ICE rear Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) system is the result of over 10 years of tireless development and testing. Providing up to 100mm (4 inches) of rear wheel travel, the suspension delivers comfort without compromising the accurate handling and control for which ICE trikes are famed. The system also minimises rear end squat during pedalling to ensure optimum power transfer. The rear suspension has been designed to give a high level of adjustability and durability, we have also developed a full range of racks and accessories to be fitted to our suspension models.
Front & Rear Suspension - Technical Information
Front Suspension
Designing front suspension for trikes provides unique challenges. How does the trike perform under heavy braking? How do you eliminate bump steer? After examining many options we decided to develop a double leading link system. The benefits of this system are as follows:
Bump Steer
Bump steer is a situation in which the steering of a trike is affected by the movement of the front suspension. The ICE front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) eliminates bump steer. This results from the fact that the steering track rod is independent of the suspension system and does not move up and down with the suspension system. This ensures that the trike does not start steering itself when it hits larger bumps and surface irregularities.
Brake Dive
The ICE front suspension utilises a double leading link system with anti-dive built in. This is a feature which cannot be added to the suspension, but has to be designed in from the start. Many cycle suspension designs have no anti-dive, and some can even provoke diving under braking. Single link and parallel link designs are well known for producing unwanted suspension movement when the brakes are applied; the quicker you stop, the more undesirable the effect on the suspension. Our double link system provides an element of stability under braking that helps to ensure a stable and predictable steering response under the most challenging conditions.
Dynamic handling & Minimal roll
Here at ICE we love riding trikes which are sharp and poised with controlled and dynamic handling. One of our concerns when developing a front suspension was to avoid developing a trike with mushy or vague handling. To avoid this scenario, we tested different suspension systems experimenting with differing levels of suspension travel. We found that while longer travel systems performed well in mountain biking situations they did not give precise on road handling without requiring heavy and expensive anti-roll bars. At this point we decided to focus our suspension towards road, track, and trail use, allowing us to reduce the maximum travel to 40mm (1.57") to deliver precise handling and light weight. We'll freely admit that our front suspension is not great for 8" (200mm) mountain bike style drop offs, but if you're riding on roads, trails and tracks; we feel it delivers an unmatched balance of precise handling and a smooth comfortable ride.
Durability and Longevity
ICE trikes are renowned for their durability and longevity, this leads to them being a popular choice for world tours. With this in mind, we've designed our front suspension for minimal maintenance. All moving parts are made from aircraft grade 6061 T6 aluminium which is precision ground or CNC machined followed by heat treating and hard-anodising processes. These moving parts run in replaceable self-lubricating bearing sleeves which are engineered to last the life of the trike. To further aid longevity the springing system is protected from grit and debris by a rubber gaiter.
Elastomer Based System
The ICE front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) system is based on a elastomeric spring unit. This has been optimised for both small bump and large bump response and also has a natural damping effect which helps control wheel movement over repeated surface irregularities.
Fully Adjustable
At ICE we always try to fit the trike to the rider. This is why we offer a selection of spring units for the front suspension, so the suspension performance can be optimised to rider weight and riding style.
Advanced Design and Engineering
The ICE front Road Response Suspension has been developed using the latest Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technology. In addition to this, our test rigs have simulated over 100,000 full load cycles to ensure the suspension is up to rigorous use, many riders won't go this far.... but it's nice to know.
Rear Suspension
The ICE Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) is based on a 7005 T6 series heat treated triangulated rear frame which combines exceptional stiffness and low weight to ensure precise handling even in extreme loading and riding situations. Utilising self lubricating and adjustable bushes running on a precision-ground hollow oversized stainless steel pins, the suspension pivot gives low friction conditions and virtually eliminates stiction within the suspension system.
Our Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) uses an elastomeric springing unit; this was selected due to its integral damping qualities, responsiveness and low maintenance requirements. Three grades of elastomer of differing stiffnesses combine with a five position adjustment system allow the suspension to be quickly and easily tuned to precisely suit the rider and riding conditions.
As with all ICE products our Road Response Suspension was developed and optimised on our CAD systems prior to the first development prototypes being made for testing.
Wide range gearing
One of the challenges for trike designers is giving a wide gear range on a machine with a smaller back wheel. Our custom Capreo gearing system gives a very wide range of gears enabling riders to go from climbing mountain passes on a fully loaded touring trike to being able to pedal at over 30mph (45 km/h) – if you are fit enough!. A standard bicycle gearing system when used with a 20" rear wheel gives a much reduced gear range which can compromise hill climbing or high speed riding ability.
Bryan Ball Managing Editor Bentrideronline – ICE Sprint test May 2010
"All of the components worked well on the Sprint also. I especially appreciated the custom gearing package that ICE has designed. Shimano no longer makes the Capreo rear hub and its 9-26 cassette but ICE now builds their own version. The shiny sealed cartridge bearing ICE rear hub is miles nicer than the Shimano version ever was and the custom designed 9-32 9-Speed cassette provided a lot more range than the original as well. ICE matches up this wide range rear wheel gearing to a Truvativ Firex crankset with 26-36-48 chainrings. That yields a low gear of about 15″ and a high gear of 97″. That is just about pitch perfect for your average rider. The steps between the gears are very well spaced also. I never felt like I was making a huge jump between them. I rarely condone plagiarism but I would encourage every manufacturer of a trike with a 20″ drivewheel to copy this layout immediately. Even with the full suspension, the Sprint was quick enough to use all of those gear inches."
26" Hardtail and 20" Suspension Models
We know that different customers prefer different versions of a trike. We therefore produce the Sprint in a variety of different frame types.
26 Hardtail
This is the entry point to the Sprint range and gives a great riding trike with a wide gear range; we also produce the Sprint 26+ for those who want a hardtail with higher specification componentry.
20" Rear suspension
This is the most popular Sprint trike, fitted with our advanced rear Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) to give a smooth ride combined with great control.
20" Full Suspension
The top of the range, giving a smooth ride combined with precise controlled handling, a very popular option. Customers can also upgrade to a full suspension model (FS+) with the very highest level of components fitted as standards.

Rider Positioning System
At ICE we believe that good rides start with a trike which fits well. Our Rider Positioning System (R.P.S) covers a combination of features which we've developed to ensure the perfect rider fit.
Adjustable Boom and Seat Angle Adjustment
This starts with our adjustable boom which allows the boom to be extended and retracted to fit your leg length. Riders can then adjust the seat angle to one of four positions over a 7.5 degree range. This may not sound like much adjustment but having the seat angle just right for you makes a big difference to your comfort. The ICE mesh seat can be tuned to the perfect fit to your back by adjusting individual straps on the back of the seat.
Custom Brackets and Short Arm Cranks and Seat Types
We've developed custom designed brackets for shorter and taller riders giving a total X-Seam range of 35 to 50 inches (see our rider fitting page for more details). Shorter riders can also order short arm cranks to ensure the most comfortable ride. Where fitted, the ICE headrest can be adjusted to provide optimum support.
Anodised Parts
Adjustable parts such as the boom and the seat back rest clamp are hard black anodised, helping to prevent cosmetic wear under continuous use, the boom also has laser-etched fit markings which allow riders to quickly adjust the trike back to their ideal riding position.
Rider Positioning System - Technical Information
FF Bracket for Short Riders
The FF bracket moves the front seat mount forward for very short legged riders. Short riders on the Sprint or Vortex who use this bracket and would like to be more upright would also need the TT bracket which can be ordered from your dealer.
FB Bracket for Tall Riders
The FB bracket - moves the front seat mount backwards for very long legged riders. Note that using this bracket with the hard shell seat will reduce the maximum recline available.
Short Crank Chainset Option
For shorter riders we can supply a front chainset with 152mm cranks in place of the more standard 170mm. These cranks come with alloy CNC machined 22/32/44 tooth chain rings on a 64/104 - 4 arm spider. The rings are smaller than those used on the standard chainset we use and hence give a more appropriate lower gear spread. Short cranks give greatly improved comfort for shorter riders and are recommended for those under approximately 5'4". They are essential for riders under approximately 5'2" to give comfort and proper fit on the trike. Please see Trike Size page for more information.
