Tim's Silver Expedition

Get your own Catrike Expedition (promo price)

Tim in Pensecola ordered this Catrike Expedition and we had a lot of fun building it. Silver is one of the "Standard" colors, but this trike is definitely not your typical Expedition. While not entirely evident from the pictures, the most obvious change is the wider 1.75 Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tires. But, you'll also notice the 42-speed drivetrain thanks to the Rholoff SpeedHub. And, to stop this wild beast? Avid Juicy 7 Hydraulic brakes. Oh yeah!
Hey Tim, can I borrow your trike when I make it down to FL?

Rohloff Shifter
Because of the Juicy 7's Hydraulic reservoir we needed to be a little creative in how we mounted the Rohloff's shifter. We decided to use an ICE mirror mount to switch the positioning. This gave us room for a full grip and it's much easier to see the numbers on the shifter too.

Marathon Plus
The Marathon Plus Tires are 1.75, which is about as wide as you can go and still run the fenders. Tim's gonna have a smooth ride and won't have to worry about flats with these tires!

Fender
Here's a good shot of the Catrike front fender setup.

Front shifter
For the front shifter we left the stock bar end shifter. We doubt it will get much use with the Rohloff in the rear. You can also see the mirror.

Sharp turns
Thanks to the Expedition's direct steering and long wheelbase you can make sharp turns easily.

Rohloff Speedhub
14 speeds in one little package, the Rohloff Speedhub is smooth shifting and ultra reliable.

Custom Wheel
Tim said he might want to use the Rohloff with some of his other bikes at some point, so we laced up a wheel that would give him maximum utility. A Velocity AeroHeat rim with smooth sides will allow him to use rim brakes if he needs to, while the Speedhub is ready to go for disc brake action with the addition of a rotor. Although the Catrikes have the Rohloff-compatible dropouts, we went with the stock torque arm to give him the most compatibility with other rides.

Clickbox
The Clickbox version of the Speedhub makes setting up the shifter real easy.

Boom
Here you can see the Catrike boom with the Protege 9 wireless computer and Shimano M540 Pedals.

Left Side
Looks a little crowded but you can see the wireless sensor, fender, Juicy brakes, and more.

Rohloff Tensioner
The Rohloff Tensioner is the best one on the market. It has a dual-jockey wrap that allows enough chain takeup that you can keep your triple up front. That gives Tim 42 gears to choose from.

Tim you are one lucky guy. I've had my Expedition since August and I love it. Be interested in how you like the Rohloff. I went stock on mine and am thinking of upgrading.

Many thanks to the guys at Utah Trikes for building my dream trike. Their expert advice made the final results more then I had ever hoped for. Have logged 212 miles on it after only 5 rides. And to answer your question NV the Rohloff will be on the back of all my rides from now on. The ability to shift to any gear at any or no speed is a major plus on the trikes.
